When thinking of Guatemalan rum, the first name that probably comes to mind is Zacapa. That’s exactly where we want to take you with this gem, distilled by the Zacapa Raíces distillery, known in the industry as Zama. One of the region’s historic distilleries, it was founded in 1976 and is located just a short distance from the capital, Guatemala City.

The Guatemala 9 Years Old is a rum made from sugarcane, distilled in 2014 in a column still, and aged in a single cask for 9 years—3 of which in a tropical climate—before being bottled at 45% ABV, without added sugars and in its natural color, with a total of 328 bottles produced.

Color: Pale amber.
Aroma: On the nose, it is fruity, with initial notes of tropical fruit, pineapple, and banana, followed by indulgent hints of vanilla and caramel.
Taste: On the palate, it is slightly spicy, with cinnamon notes. Then, much like on the nose, it shifts to sweetness, with caramel, honey, and a light touch of smoky oak.
Finish: The finish is medium in persistence, enveloping, with notes of vanilla, honey, oak, and a dusting of cocoa.
