Glenrothes Distillery is located just outside the town of Rothes, in the heart of Speyside. It was built in 1878, but the first distillation from its stills took place on December 28, 1879. Legend has it that James Stuart, the founder, faced financial difficulties and couldn't complete the construction. He was unexpectedly helped by the most unlikely person, Reverend William Sharp of the Presbyterian Church in nearby Archiestown. Reverend Sharp was a devout man and a pillar of the community, but he was also smart enough to realize that building a distillery would provide stable employment for dozens of people. He persuaded local businesses and prominent figures to donate 600 pounds, the sum needed to complete the distillery's construction.
The Glenrothes 9 Years Old by Valinch & Mallet is a single malt Scotch whisky distilled in 2013 and aged for 9 years in a single first-fill ex-Oloroso sherry cask. It was bottled in 2022 at its natural strength (52.9% ABV), unchill filtered, and with no added coloring, in only 369 bottles.
