The Bunnahabhain Toiteach A Dhà—pronounced “Toch-ach ah-ghaa”—can be translated from Scottish Gaelic as “Smoky Two,” as it is the second release of the distillery’s peated whisky from Islay. This single malt Scotch whisky is aged in a mix of American ex-bourbon casks and European ex-Oloroso sherry casks. Bottled at 46.3% ABV, it is non-chill filtered and has no added color.
The main difference between Bunnahabhain and other Islay distilleries is that Bunnahabhain does not typically produce peated whisky. After the distillery was renovated in the 1960s, the owners decided to focus on lighter, maritime-style whiskies. But what would Bunnahabhain have been like before the 1960s? Toiteach gives us a glimpse.
